as a gift to her mother, h is remodeling another room in her mom's house. i helped her remodel one of the bedrooms last year, and we fumbled through the techniques enough to be able to do a more efficient job this time around. h has been ripping out the old flooring and molding, and we've found some interesting things beneath the surface.
the first treasure was the layer of peel-and-stick tile beneath the carpet and padding. i can't imagine that ever being a trendy floor covering, but h tells me that the home depot still moves plenty of units out the door. (i'll personally be sticking with the tile or laminate, thank you... or perhaps some eco-friendly bamboo flooring.) the second treat was hiding behind a patch in the wall... a previous owner had insulated the space behind the patch with old newspapers. a little scary, considering there's a wall heater in the hall on the other side of that wall. third, the foundation looks like it's cracking on the south side of the house.
to top it off, i discovered a random puddle of water in the bathroom in the morning. i tried to wake h up to let her know, but she sleepily shrugged it off, saying it must have been runoff from the shower. neither of us had used that shower the night before, but i was headed into work and didn't think too much of it. five minutes after i left, h was blasted awake by the blissful harmony of a bursting, spraying pipeline. the puddle was a precursor to the implosion of the toilet input line... clean water, and fortunately on the outside of the wall, but what a mess!
is this practice for the real deal, when i get to experience the joys of my own home ownership? well, at least i'm handier than i used to be...
