promotability

what makes someone a good manager? and how do you know if someone will be a good manager if they've never had managerial experience? it's a small leap of faith, of course, but someone's promotability can be determined through his or her actions. typically, there are two types of promotable employees-- those who are subject matter experts and those who are leaders. subject matter experts demonstrate promotability through their expertise, and leaders show their capability by taking initiative and being effective in the workplace. ideally, a good manager will have both of these qualities, so organizations and clients have confidence in both the manager's knowledge and leadership ability. can one teach leadership, though? we can be excellent employees, extremely proficient at our jobs, but that doesn't necessarily make us capable of stepping into trouble-shooting shoes. promotability also requires a heavy dose of diplomacy, and the ability to step back for a larger perspective. it takes some doing to recognize the responsibility of being a manager.

i hope i'm up for the job... i'm definitely excited about the challenge, and i hope i do as well as some of the managers i've been fortunate to have. wish me luck!
