what the hell is happening to my earthquakes? GM johnny moore resigned yesterday, and rumors are flying that mexican league team club america is going to buy the team. club america wants to change the team name, colors, and logo, and possibly move the team to a city that will build a soccer-specific stadium. they also plan to recruit heavily from the mexican league... it looks as though league commissioner don garber is looking to make a quick buck and turn MLS into a farm league for mexican soccer. what a frustrating and disappointing possibility, as an avid fan and loyal follower. MLS and AEG, the owner/operator, are trying to buy the hispanic audience, but they're doing it in a way that could very well alienate the fanbase that has been developed over the past eight years. has anyone over at AEG ever heard of marketing tactics? uh, hello? make it possible for people come see games cheaply, and build your audience that way. AUGH! none of my teams has ever moved or suffered a major overhaul, and it'll break my heart to see it happen to the earthquakes. that's my team, and i'm not sure i'll be able to keep it that way if it becomes undeniably clear that they don't care about fans like me. i travelled to los angeles and columbus to support them, for goodness' sake, shouldn't they want to keep fans like me too? frank probably was wise to leave when he did... in other quakes news, manny lagos was traded to columbus today for a third-round draft pick (the draft is this friday). as bryan notes, that may feed into a return to the minnesota thunder and a possible coaching position... that would be a good place for manny to finish his career.
